Don't speak too soon

Thomas Jones

The second verse of Bob Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin'' tells 'writers and critics' not to ‘speak too soon/For the wheel’s still in spin/And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’.' Dylan was smart enough when he wrote that to know that his own prophecies were as unreliable as anyone's. And I don't suppose anyone in the audience at Carnegie Hall in October 1963 would have predicted that the song's handwritten lyrics would one day be bought by a hedge fund manager (the name on fortune's wheel last week was Adam Sender) for $422,500. Not that the wheel's stopped spinning yet. And if hedge fund managers are putting their cash in forty-year-old scraps of notepaper, perhaps the so-called global economic recovery is even more fragile than reported.
